Types of AI Based on Capabilities

1. Narrow Artificial Intelligence (Weak AI)

Narrow AI is the most common form of artificial intelligence used today. It is designed to perform a specific task or a limited set of tasks. This type of AI cannot think beyond its programmed purpose and does not possess human-like consciousness.

Examples of Narrow AI include voice assistants like Siri and Alexa, recommendation systems on Netflix and YouTube, facial recognition software, and self-driving car features. Narrow AI works efficiently within its boundaries but cannot generalize knowledge across different fields.


2. General Artificial Intelligence (Strong AI)

General AI refers to a machine that has the ability to understand, learn, and apply intelligence across a wide range of tasks, just like a human being. This type of AI can reason, solve problems, and adapt to new situations without specific programming.

At present, General AI does not exist. It remains a theoretical concept that researchers aim to achieve in the future. If developed, General AI could perform any intellectual task that a human can do, raising both exciting possibilities and serious ethical concerns.


3. Super Artificial Intelligence (Super AI)

Super AI is a hypothetical form of intelligence that surpasses human intelligence in every aspect, including creativity, emotional understanding, and decision-making. This type of AI would be able to improve itself independently and make better decisions than humans.

Although Super AI exists only in theory and science fiction today, it is often discussed in debates about the future of humanity. Experts emphasize the importance of safety, ethics, and control if such advanced AI ever becomes reality.


Types of AI Based on Functionality

4. Reactive Machines

Reactive machines are the most basic type of AI. They do not have memory or the ability to learn from past experiences. Instead, they react to current inputs based on predefined rules.

A well-known example is IBM’s Deep Blue, the chess-playing computer that defeated a world chess champion. While it could analyze the game and make decisions, it could not learn from previous matches.


5. Limited Memory AI

Limited Memory AI can learn from past data and improve its performance over time. Most modern AI systems fall into this category. These machines store information temporarily and use it to make better decisions.

Self-driving cars are a good example. They use data from sensors, cameras, and past driving experiences to navigate roads safely and avoid obstacles.


6. Theory of Mind AI

Theory of Mind AI is an advanced concept where machines would be able to understand human emotions, beliefs, and intentions. This type of AI could interact socially and respond emotionally to people.

Currently, Theory of Mind AI is still under research and development. Once achieved, it could greatly improve human-machine interaction in fields like healthcare, education, and customer service.


7. Self-Aware AI

Self-aware AI represents the most advanced stage of artificial intelligence. These machines would have self-consciousness, awareness of their own existence, and emotions.

Self-aware AI does not exist today and remains a topic of speculation. It raises deep philosophical and ethical questions about machine rights and responsibilities.

From simple reactive machines to the idea of self-aware AI, each type represents a step in technological progress.
